Wake-Up Tonic

This is your morning wake-up call.

This drink can be quite intense first thing, but it will do wonders to wake you up.

It works like a detox ‘tonic’, helping to cleanse and restore your digestive system first thing.

On a day-to-day basis I just have my straight lemon water (often mixed with a dash of ACV) but this ‘wake-up tonic’ is one i’ll have if i’m feeling run-down or a little sluggish.

Oh Lemons….

Lemons are pretty special.  When I think of their fresh scent, I immediately feel awake.  And in fact their scent is said to promote a clear mind, calm anxieties and centre your focus.

Lemons have been used for centuries for their well-known healing properties and they’re best known as natural cleansers, purifiers, rejuvenators and detoxifiers.

A squeeze of fresh lemon in the morning does wonders to kick start your metabolism, boost your immune system with Vitamin C and give the liver a little wake-up call.

Lemons help to stimulate the liver to produce bile, as well as improving peristalsis movement in the stomach- to assist in getting things moving.

Turmeric…

Including this in your morning drink helps to strengthen the immune system as well as provide anti-inflammatory properties (through the active compound curcumin), meaning it helps to reduce joint pain, reduce liver toxicity and even clear out inflammation throughout the internal body.

Cayenne Pepper...

Cayenne Pepper has a wide array of beautifying and healing properties.  In particular it’s known for assisting the bodies natural detox pathways.  It is a circulatory stimulant, meaning it helps the blood and metabolism to move a little faster, breaking down congestion, stimulating the digestive tract and increasing enzyme production.

Ginger…

Ginger is a wonderful ingredient to include first thing in the morning, either in a drink (like below) or in a smoothie.  Ginger helps to boost the immune system, the metabolism, it aids with digestion and is also anti-inflammatory in the body.

Enjoy this drink after a large glass or two of room temperature fresh water.  

You’ll feel cleansed and hydrated before you begin your day (and before you down that coffee).

Ingredients:

~ 1 large cup warm water

~ 1 fresh lemon

~ 1/2 – 1 tsp turmeric powder

~ 1/4 – 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (or to taste)

~ 1 tsp honey (or to taste)

~ A knob of fresh ginger (grated)

*Optional – 1 tsp coconut oil & 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

How to:

Squeeze the fresh lemon juice into the glass of warm water, add all the ingredients and

stir vigorously until all combined.  Sip this calmly, before your day begins.

*The ginger should settle at the bottom but if not feel free to pour everything through a sieve.
