What is kombucha?
Kombucha is a fermented tea that is naturally carbonated and packed to the brim with good bacteria and probiotics. Traditionally, this ancient Chinese drink was made by fermenting black tea with yeast and a certain type of bacteria known as a scoby. Over a period of time, the scoby mixes with the tea to create a powerful combo of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Some type of sweetener (ideally natural) is required to get the fermentation process going and the scoby feeds off the sugar and absorbs it right up. This makes kombucha suitable for those looking to minimise their sugar intake, however it is still important to check the ingredients for added sweeteners if you’re buying off the shelves.
What are the health benefits of kombucha?
The main health benefit we love about kombucha is its role in promoting great digestion and a healthy tum. This is all thanks to the variety of delicious probiotics found in kombucha, proven to help maintain a healthy intestinal flora. These probiotics work to increase the acidity in your gut, crucial for easing digestion and breaking down food more efficiently.
In addition to promoting a happy and healthy gut, the contents of kombucha provide a range of B vitamins, which help with nervous system functioning, including promoting a good mood and improving concentration. Kombucha also provides a good dose of vitamin C to help boost your immunity. While these vitamins may only be found in trace amounts in your lil bottle of booch, they are highly bioavailable which means your body grabs onto them and uses them very effectively.
