Kale

Kale is touted as one of the greatest superfoods out, a nutritional powerhouse AND the food with the most nutrition per kJ of energy out of all foods. Fair to say that this super green is packed to the max with important nutrients and is one of the world’s healthiest foods! Here are five great benefits of adding kale to your diet…

KaleVitamin K

Kale is one of the few foods you can consume to obtain good amounts of vitamin K in your diet. Vitamin K is great for developing and maintaining strong & healthy bones because it acts as a modifier of protein in your bones, improves the absorption of calcium and also reduces bodily excretion of calcium. Low intakes of vitamin K have been associated with brittle bones and a higher risk for bone fracture. The benefits of vitamin K don’t stop there… It has also been linked to improving symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Fibre

Kale has significantly more fibre per kJ than any other food. We love fibre! This important content of fibre found in kale is wonderful for helping you to keep a healthy heart, digestive system, blood sugar levels, and of course perfect for keeping you full for longer! The ideal satiating addition to your breakfast that will keep you going right through ’til lunchtime. It is also important for keeping your liver at its prime in naturally detoxifying your body.

Phytonutrients

As with the rest of the brassica family of vegetables, kale is super duper rich in phytonutrients, including the superstar sulforaphane, a chemical researched to have powerful anti-cancer properties. While there are more than 45 different antioxidant flavonoids available in kale, kaempferol and quercetin appear to be the most prevalent and most likely the reason for the substantial health benefits of kale. Foods that are jam packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients are always winners in your diet!

Iron

Per kj of energy, kale has more iron than beef! This is great for those on vegetarian and vegan diets who may be at higher risk of iron deficiency. Including kale in your daily intake will certainly help keep your iron levels above the minimum! Iron is essential for great health for its role in developing haemoglobin and enzymes, transporting oxygen around the body, cell growth, optimal liver function, healthy hair, skin, eyes, nails… and more! Its role in keeping the liver healthy makes it a great addition to any cleanse program to enhance the liver’s natural detoxifying function.

Vitamins A & C

These two little superstar vitamins can be found abundantly in kale and have awesome health benefits. Vitamin A is great for your vision and your skin, as well as helping to reduce your risk of some cancers. Vitamin C, as we all know, is very helpful for your immune system, your metabolism and your hydration. Absolutely key to your everyday intake to see you in fighting fit shape!
