Naturally refreshing and super nourishing, coconut water is no longer only consumed while lazing on the beach in the Tropics. This popular thirst quencher offers a tasty alternative to water with a little extra kick for your health.
Coconut water is the clear liquid found in the centre of young, green coconuts, consumed straight from the coconut or now often seen in bottles and cans throughout numerous health shops and supermarkets. Coconut water is all the rage in the health world, not only as an alternative to water but also as a yummy sweet addition to smoothies. So why has it become such a wonder drink in the health world?
We are all well aware that sipping on plenty of water throughout the day is necessary to reach optimal hydration (and optimal health!) so if you’re looking for something a little more exciting than your usual tap water, coconut water might be your answer. Coconut water is high in electrolytes and made up of 95% water so works just as well as water to prevent dehydration in your body.
Unlike fruit juices, energy drinks and fizzies, coconut water will give you a nice sweet hit without the added nasties (and kilojoules!). It is not completely kilojoule-free like water, however it is a great option if you have a sweet tooth but are looking to avoid unnecessary refined sugars and calories.
Potassium, one of the most important electrolytes in the body, is a vital mineral that is necessary for brain and nervous system health, muscle strength and a healthy heart. Low levels of potassium can occur when too much fluid is lost from the body i.e. through sweat, urine, vomiting and diarrhoea. When you lose fluids you also lose electrolytes and it is super important to replace them! Coconut water is a rich source of potassium with one serving covering almost 15% of your daily needs, therefore it it would be great to consume if you are experiencing any sort of tummy illness or after a good sweat session.
High in Magnesium
Magnesium is another important component of the diet and a mineral that many people do not consume enough of. It is important for energy, bone & muscle health and a healthy nervous system. A serving of coconut water will provide you with about 15% of your daily magnesium needs so is an easy supplement if your body is running low on this vital mineral.
Rich in Antioxidants
It’s always great to be loading our bodies with antioxidants from every different angle. Coconut water contains plenty of these little wonders, which help to prevent the damage to our bodies caused by free radicals. It is inevitable that everyone has free radicals in their bodies to some extent as they occur from our normal metabolic processes, however there is an easy way to neutralise the effect of these nasties, and that is by consuming sufficient antioxidants in the diet. Coconut water will certainly help with that!
If you’re a fan of the sweet taste and hydrating effect of coconut water, we suggest supplementing it into your diet at any opportunity! Drink it by the coconut, by the can or add a cup to your daily smoothie for a tasty and nourishing addition.
