Usually as the weather starts to warm up and the days become longer there are more social occasions in the workplace. More reason to be having a glass of wine in the afternoons with your co-workers and perhaps start snackin’ on some not-so-healthy goodies. It’s also the time where we have the opportunity to be more active outdoors and can eat a little lighter! Finding that balance in your life is key and what easier place to maintain some healthy habits than in the workplace. We’ve shared some easy tricks that we use here at I AM Co. to keep the workplace as healthy as possible at all times of year…
Stock the Kitchen with Healthy Snacks
If you know you’re one to hit a 3pm slump and be reaching for the closest cookie jar or vending machine, best keep that communal kitchen or your top drawer well stocked with some healthy snackies. Gluten-free crackers, nuts, seeds, fruit, natural snack bars and bliss balls are a few of our faves. We also love to top gluten-free toast or rice thins with peanut butter or avo and tomato for a quick and filling bite. By keeping healthy snacks at your fingertips, you are much less likely to opt for sugar-laden treats that will cause the dreaded sugar crash. If you have a communal kitchen in your workplace and a team budget to keep the pantries and fridges stocked, read up on our Top 5 Healthy Snacks to get an idea of how the I AM Co. kitchen looks.
Pack a Yummo Lunch
Packing a lunch alleviates opportunities to opt for naughty foods. If you are choosing what to eat for lunch just as the mid-morning hunger sets in, you are likely to be craving fatty or sugary foods that you think your body needs. The trick here is to minimise your freedom of choice by organising a nourishing lunch the prior evening and having it ready to go as soon as lunchtime hits. Remember that packed lunches don’t have to be boring. In fact, they can be even more exciting than bought lunches! Whether you’re storing away some dinner leftovers, making a big batch of soup or curry to last the week, or putting together fresh wraps, salads or sandwiches first in the morning, packed lunches are such a simple way to keep your workplace healthy!
Sip on Water
We’re told time and time again how important it is to keep our bodies hydrated and it’s great that this is now (hopefully) drilled into everyone’s heads! Sipping away on a bottle, a glass or a thermos of fresh water throughout the entire day is KEY to amazing health. If you feel hunger setting in, first drink some water as it may just be your body telling you that you are dehydrated. The only time to minimise your water intake would be during your big meals of the day to avoid diluting your stomach acids and thus preventing maximal nutrient absorption. If you’re not a big water drinker yourself it’s easy to disguise it in herbal teas (hot or cold, whatever tickles your fancy), or even with a little fresh fruit & cinnamon… Our fave!
Move That Bod
… and don’t stay slumped over your computer desk all day long! No matter what the nature of your job is, there is no excuse for you to be sitting down all day long. If most of your work is done on a computer, schedule in regular intervals to get up from your desk, walk around, chat to colleagues and even grab a breath of fresh air. If you’re feeling brave you could even keep a mat at work that you can roll out when you feel like your body needs a quick stretch. If you work in a high rise building, take the steps not the lift. Move your body and walk around at any opportunity you have!
Introduce Some Greenery
Plants are known to have a positively energising influence in the workplace and may even increase your productivity levels. Yes please! By helping to remove toxins and thus improving the air quality in the space, plants allow you to become less exposed to things like dust, bugs and other environmental pollutants, which may give you a clearer mindset and increased focus. A green working environment is not only more enjoyable for workers, but also a lot prettier than blank space! If you find your workplace is lacking ‘life’, introduce some greenery.
