The Do’s and Don’ts of Choosing a Snack Bar

If you’re looking for a snack bar that truly provides energy instead of zapping it, we’re about to make it a lot easier for you!

Snack bars have been heavily relied on as a quick on-the-go snack for a long time but many bars that are surrounded by health halos are actually full of unhealthy ingredients.

We’ve discussed our Do’s and Don’t’s when it comes to choosing snack bars next time you’re keen for quick munch!

DO….

1. Search for wholefood ingredients

Look for combinations of whole grains, nuts, seeds and fruit with NO additives or preservatives.

2. Keep it simple

When it comes to snack bars “less is more” is definitely the approach to take. The smaller amount of ingredients generally means the healthier the bar. Take Sanitarium Naturally Nood bars for example, made up of 50% cashews and the other 50% dates, that’s it! Just two simple ingredients make up this deliciously nourishing and satiating snack bar.

3. Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water after your snack so you are filling up and not searching for more at the bottom of the packet.

DON’T….

1. Pick one with unpronounceable ingredients

If you scan your eyes over the ingredient list and don’t recognise more than half the ingredients, it’s probably not a good sign. Too many bars have added sugars and preservatives hidden inside that may be detrimental to your health. If we can leave you with one message about choosing the right snack bar, it’s to always check the ingredients.

2. Let your snack bar become your meal

If you’re starting to feel a little peckish think about the last time you ate and whether your body is going to feel happier after a snack or a meal. A high-energy snack bar is not going to be as satisfying as a proper meal and might leave you hungry for more. Treat your snack bar as just that; a snack to hold you over until your next meal. Pick a bar between 400-700kJ depending on how soon your next meal is.

3. Forget about the fibre content

The dietary fibre in your snack bar is a strong determinant of how full you will feel after eating. We recommend at least 6g/100g serving, this will allow your body to digest the bar more slowly and regulate your blood sugar so it is not spiking. A good amount of dietary fibre will keep your energy levels high and your tummy happy, this is why we love the ‘Naturally Nood’ bars with 2.1g per each 35g bar.
