5 Add-Ons to Supe Up Your Smoothie

There are many incredible superfood powders you can add to your already nourishing smoothie to boost its nutritional value and take it up to the next level. It’s easy to jam pack sooo much goodness into one jar of smoothie love so we’ve shared some of our favourites below…



Sometimes coined as the ‘Peruvian ginseng’, this root vegetable has been used for centuries to boost energy and stamina, as well as manage mood and everyday stress. In more recent times it has been researched as a hormone balancer for both men and women, showing that it may help regulate menstrual cycles in women. Rich in all essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals, 1 teaspoon of maca is an absolute no-brainer in your daily smoothie!


Spirulina is a cyanobacteria that was initially found in natural alkaline lakes in South America and Africa. It is a rich source of protein, chlorophyll, B-complex vitamins, beta-carotene, essential fatty acids and minerals. WOW, so much nourishment! This unique combination of nutrients provide a natural detoxifying influence in your body, oxygenating your blood to help cleanse out toxins and impurities. Yes please! Throw 1 teaspoon into your smoothie to ramp up that green goodness.


Flaxseeds are a little wonderfood! They are rich in fibre, which has great benefits for digestive health and keeping everything running smoothly. They are also high in omega-3s, important for optimal brain function and heart health. Further to this, flaxseeds are a wonderful source of lignans, a powerful phytonutrient that has been found to be protective against heart disease and some cancers. Flaxseeds need to be ground down for our bodies to reap the full benefits. The ‘mucilage’ or gel-like consistency they form in the body is a fantastic source of insoluble fibre. Add 1 tablespoon of these babes to your morning smoothie for a nutrient hit! (Or, a drizzle of Flaxseed Oil to your salad dressing if you are that way inclined).

Raw cacao comes straight from the cacao bean and has many important nutrients and flavonoids to offer. Its main benefit is for boosting brain function and improving overall mood, thus a great inclusion at anytime of day that should leave you with the warm fuzzies! Cacao is also high in magnesium which is important for reducing muscle tension, managing anxiety and promoting restful sleep. Add it into a pre- or post-workout smoothie or sip on a hot cacao before sleepytime to send you off soundly.


One of the most widely researched foods, chlorella is a greenie superfood that is abundant in a huge amount of vitamins and minerals to support immune function and overall wellbeing. Gram for gram, it is more nutrient dense than kale, spinach and broccoli. With a mild taste, 1 teaspoon of chlorella in your smoothie is sure to provide energy, boost immune function and put that extra spring in your step!
