It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness. 

Call us nosy, but we’ve always been curious about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye, polished for their day.  

We wonder, what did they eat for breakfast? Did they meditate? Did they stretch? Did they hit the snooze button? Did they only need to worry about themselves or a family…? So many questions!

Follow along as we step into the mornings of a wide range of successful ladies from all over and to uncover what habits put the spring in their morning step..

This week belongs to the beautiful Vashti Uys, Founder and Designer at MOOI.

Mooi makes beautiful ethically produced handbags and clutches. Vashti is also the mother of two boys Kings and Kobi and wife of Darren.

MOOI – meaning ‘beautiful’ in Afrikaans, epitomises the ethos behind both the brand and founder and designer Vashti’s outlook on life and business, and has inspired the marriage between the creation of beautiful, sustainable and ethically produced fashion accessories.

Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed…?

I am an early riser and so is my youngest son, so Kobi and I usually meet in the hall around 5am before popping down to start our morning catch up. The other two (my eldest son Kings and husband Darren) usually roll out of bed a little later, then as a family we bike to the beach for our morning surf or swim. Once home, the boys get fed and suited up for school and then together we work through their homework tasks. My sons are busy most days after school so getting stuck into school work in the morning gets it out the way.  Once they are off to school, depending on the day I may head out for a run or a yoga session. Then I start my MOOI day – first 10 minutes is planning followed by any scheduled meetings. I love getting meetings all knocked out the park well before midday when my energy and attention levels are at their highest!

What’s the first thing you drink?

After brushing my teeth and tongue I have my health supplement with a large glass of water. Once down stairs, I make a lemon water to sip on.

What’s the first thing you eat?

Most mornings I have a superfood smoothie for breakfast which is always seasonal then a snack of popcorn or almonds mid-morning.

What’s your favourite way to move your body in the morning?

I am super fortunate to have moved close to the beach at the beginning of the year. We head down for a surf or a swim first thing most mornings. This is by far the very best start for me, I love being in nature and the sea is so cleansing! A close second to a surf first thing is yoga, I am practising Bikram Yoga at the moment – it was tough at the beginning though after several months my body and mind have responded really well to the new challenge.

How important is stillness or ‘quiet space’ first thing?

Once my sons are off to school and I have completed my work-out I then get the stillness I crave.  I take my coffee with me and sit outside peacefully, and spend ten minutes mapping out my day ahead and prioritizing key tasks. I am using this wonderful planning tool a girl friend gave the “The Self Journal” – I am on week 6 of 12 on my first book and it is completely revolutionising how I allocate my time to work on what is important.

Describe your ultimate morning. No kids, no obligations…?

Best morning ever is going to the beach first thing, warm water, perfect waves and not many people. Off to a delicious cafe for an eggy breakfast and coffee followed by a full body, deep tissue massage, finally stopping off for a spot of impulse shopping where everything I love and try on looks divine and is in stock in my size!!! That would be my absolutely ultimate morning!

My husband Darren is wonderful in the kitchen and my favourite breakfast combo of his is scrambled eggs, halloumi cheese, avocado and mushrooms on crunchy ciabatta! THE BEST!!
