A Morning In Her Shoes – Sara Graham

It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.

Call me nosy, but i’ve always been curious about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye polished for their day.

I wonder, how did their day start…have they eaten breakfast yet? Did they meditate? Did they already run 8km? Find out…

We will be asking a range of successful ladies from all over to find out what habits put the spring in their morning step.

Sara Graham

This week we have the lovely Sara Graham, behind the lifestyle blog Fresh Presse.

Sara Graham is a worldly entrepreneur, yoga teacher and author of How To Make Big Moves: Relocate Without Losing Your Mind. She completed her teacher training in Toronto and taught her very first class while at a writers’ workshop in Guatemala. Since then she has taught restorative yoga in Canada, the Czech Republic, New Zealand and Sweden. Sara currently lives in Uppsala (Sweden) with her partner Mario and two cats, Tigerlily and Dragon.

I AM Co. was a part of Sara’s Kickstarter campaign last January, which helped fund the #bigmoves project. HTMBM is her first guidebook and to celebrate the launch there’s an exclusive offer for you below!

Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed… what habits or rising rituals do you have that keep you on top and in the game?

For me, it starts the night before. I try to think ahead and organize depending on what’s happening the next morning. If I am going to the gym, I’ll pack my bag. Making sure I have all the stuff I need to make a smoothie is also important.

I always disconnect my phone around 10pm so there are no social media dings and alerts and it always stays in the kitchen overnight. Keeping the phone in a separate room was hard at first, but doing so has definitely helped curb the urge to look at social media when I wake up. I’m on a mission to get my guy on the same train! It feels so much better to get into work after I’ve gone through my morning routine. I may start my day later, but I am far more productive and focused.

A positive mindset is everything.

Upon rising…

What do you drink?

Probably the same thing every wellness cheerleader drinks… A glass of room temperature water with half a lemon squeezed in.

lemon waterWhat do you eat?

I basically alternate between my green smoothie and my “Saturday Special” (recipes below). On gym days, I’ll have some of the green smoothie before working out, saving the rest for immediately after. And then I usually skip off to work at a café for a while. My favourite Swedish combo is a lactose-free latte and a chocolate ball.

The latter is all butter, oats, sugar and cocoa coated in coconut flakes. Probably the healthiest choice of the selection at cafes here.

If I am at home I’ll make the other smoothie, which has more density and holds me until lunch.

How do you move?

Every other day I’ll go for a run. Now that it’s summer here, I’ve suspended my gym membership and can enjoy jogging around lovely, green Uppsala.

When I get home, and on the days I don’t run, I’ll get on the mat for about 20 minutes of stretching, which is more or less a moving meditation. I usually listen to a chakra-related meditation.

Do you have a practice of stillness or quiet?

Yes, every day and it’s my saving grace. Even if it’s just five minutes, and even if I am at the gym. I try to shut everything out and just focus to clear my head using a mantra like ‘Om Swaha’, which relates to the third chakra and helps balance your power centre.

Can you share your favourite go-to breakfast recipe?

Here are two that require many of the same ingredients. Enjoy!
