It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.
Call us nosy, but we’ve always been curious about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye, polished for their day.
We wonder, what did they eat for breakfast? Did they meditate? Did they stretch? Did they hit snooze? Did they have to only worry about themselves or a family…? So many curious questions!
Follow along as we step into the mornings of a wide range of successful ladies from all over and to uncover what habits put the spring in their morning step…
This week we speak to the inspiring and beautiful yogi, Nikki Ralston.
Nikki is just 38 years young, she has created her own method of teaching yoga called ‘the Ralston method’, as well as owning the ‘Urban Ashram’ studio in Ponsonby, Auckland.
” I really am living my purpose by creating change, I disrupt limited self perception and empower people with tools to live full, healthier, happier lives. I have a beautiful 10 year old daughter Ahlianah, the most supportive loving partner Sef and loyal companion Tellah, my dog. “
Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed…
My days start differently depending on what time my first class is, it’s either a 5.30am wake up and straight to the studio or a more chilled 6.30am, if I’m teaching I’ll eat after class otherwise it’s a morning like most parents, I try to start with a meditation to set the tone and energy for the day ahead, this is normally 20min but some days it’s simply while I’m in the shower.
I make breakfast and get my daughter off to school or her sports practices and head into the studio, I like to do my own practice before teaching starts, light the candles and make sure the studio is warm and inviting for when students arrive. I always say the hardest part of the practice is making it on to the mat, so I like the studio to feel like coming hOMe.
What’s the first thing you drink?
I have a grunty shot of apple cider vinegar, lemon and turmeric before I head to the shower. It helps alkalise my system and reduce inflammation.
What’s the first thing you eat?
Normally a smoothie if I have to teach or if I’m eating after class I like bacon and eggs to sustain my energy.
What’s your favourite way to move your body in the morning?
YOGA!!! Surprise surprise! In the morning I love nothing more that a practice that opens my body and sets my mind clear. I save any dynamic workouts or training until later in the day.
How important is stillness or ‘quiet space’ first thing?
Essential… or else I can get a little cranky if I feel rushed.
Describe your ultimate morning. No kids, no obligations…?
Funny thing is I’ve just had two weeks of my ultimate morning while I’ve been away in Northern California! Morning snuggles, meditation while breakfast and coffee are being made for me. Followed by a beach walk and yoga practice, followed by something yummy to eat.
Please share your favourite breakfast recipe…what’s your go-to?
If I’m organised the night before, sometimes I will make it in a jar to take with me…
Chocolate chia pudding:
3 tbsp Chia Seeds
1 tbsp Raw Cacao
3/4 cup Coconut Milk.
Shake together, leave overnight to soak. Layer with berries and banana in the morning, sprinkle with coconut sugar and toasted hazelnuts.
