It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.
Call us nosy, but we’ve always been curious about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye, polished for their day.
We wonder, what did they eat for breakfast? Did they meditate? Did they stretch? Did they hit the snooze button? Did they only need to worry about themselves or a family…? So many questions!
Follow along as we step into the mornings of a wide range of successful ladies from all over and to uncover what habits put the spring in their morning step..
This week belongs to Nicki Hanning, founder of True Mindful Beauty.
I’m a Mum of two, founder, chief skin alchemist and dreamer of True Mindful Beauty, based in what I call paradise (Wanaka).
Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed…?
Each morning I am woken by our chocolate lab Piko jumping on the bed at 6am. I plug into my guided mediation app for 10-20 minutes depending on when the kids tumble in for a morning snuggle. I pull a card from my Kris Carr card deck aptly named – ‘Messages from your Wise & Fabulous Inner Self’ and try to take the message into my day. Today’s card “Tell the truth”.
What’s the first thing you drink?
I always have a glass of water by my bed and drink this on waking. Followed by a cup of tea in the kitchen with the kids.
What’s the first thing you eat?
I love nothing more than scrambling an egg with sourdough toast smothered with avocado, and sauerkraut. (Both the eggs and bread are created by amazing Wanaka locals/chickens) I also like a bit of homemade granola and have been a smoothie freak for 20 years so can’t go pass a good smoothie.
What’s your favourite way to move your body in the morning?
Every day I take my dog up to the lake and walk out into nature. There’s no one there so it’s a perfect place to clear the head and plan the rest of the day. I also go to yoga mid-week.
How important is stillness or ‘quiet space’ first thing?
My mediation in the morning is super important as it sets a still point from where to start from. Using the breath is a very simple but powerful way to find stillness in your day and it is my most used self-care tool after experiencing panic attacks 12 years ago. Being a mum, wife and passionate entrepreneur, finding a place of stillness in my day is super important. I naturally recharge my energy being alone and this is a non-negotiable for me (except holidays – I have to let things go a little) Even if it’s only for 3 minutes of quiet breathing it makes all the difference.
Describe your ultimate morning. No kids, no obligations…?
A leisurely lie in bed with a cup of tea and a book in hand. Followed by a morning bath (I love my bath rituals) a fresh juice or smoothie and quiet walk by the lake with my dog taking in the beautiful sights of nature.
Please share your favourite breakfast recipe…what’s your go-to?
Scrambled eggs with sourdough toast – smothered with avocado and Be Nourished Ruby Perfection raw sauerkraut.
