It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.
We are fascinated about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye, polished for their day.
We wonder, what did they eat for breakfast? Did they meditate? Did they stretch? Did they hit the snooze button? Did they only need to worry about themselves or a family? …So many questions!
Follow along as we step into the mornings of a wide range of successful ladies to uncover what habits put the spring in their morning step…
This week belongs to the beautiful Silver Fern star Kayla Cullen…
” My name is Kayla Cullen or go by the nick names kay kay or Malvs. I am an aquarius baby and have been around the sun 25 times. I am currently studying interior design and a member of the Northern Stars and Silver Ferns netball teams. I am also a chocoholic “.
Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed?
I literally roll out of bed around 6am and whip on some training gear, I say good morning to my dog….who will be snoring and would have no clue what a morning sunrise looks like. I skull a glass of water grab a banana or make a smoothie if I have enough time before I make the 40 minute hike out to Papakura which is where the Stars training base is. Surprisingly I am one of the first in the gym each morning so I get a bit of time to roll around on the ground (on a foam roller) and stretch and wake up properly before I lift some tin or smash out a cardio session.
What’s the first thing you drink?
Other than water I will make a smoothie with banana, coconut water, mango if I’m feeling tropical or mixed berries and a sneaky leaf or two if spinach or kale. I also add a scoop of the Beauty Kitchen’s Glow powder and Adashiko collagen powder or a scoop of Nuzests Good Green Stuff.
What’s the first thing you eat?
I usually keep it quite light in the mornings and go for a bircher muesli or round two smoothie with a scoop of Nuzest protein powder for recovery.
What’s your favourite way to move your body in the morning?
I always enjoy stretching in the morning and rolling out as I feel like my body can really benefit from it at this time. Also I’m usually a bit achey after the previous nights training and from all the weird positions i like to sleep in (not a pretty sleeper) so it feels nice to stretch out all the muscles that have worked extremely hard the day before.
How important is stillness or ‘quiet space’ first thing?
I have always believed that the space you live in can really affect your mood or how you feel. I like to keep my room serene with neutral colours and as clutter free as possible, I think this is important so the mind can be still and not distracted and busy when you wake up.
Describe your ultimate morning, no obligations…
I’m not going to lie, I am not the biggest fan of getting up early so a sleep in, and waking up at 10am would be a good start! Followed by a walk with my dog to a local cafe to grab a smoothie, perfect!!!
