It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.
Call us nosy, but we’ve always been curious about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye, polished for their day.
We wonder, what did they eat for breakfast? Did they meditate? Did they stretch? Did they hit snooze? Did they have to only worry about themselves or a family…? So many curious questions!
Follow along as we step into the mornings of a wide range of successful ladies from all over and to uncover what habits put the spring in their morning step…
This week, we’re sneaking into the morning of Jane Lowe, the glowing yogi and writer behind The Yoga Connection. TYC is NZ’s beautiful yoga community forum, blog and host to all the yoga happenings around NZ.
Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed… what habits or rising rituals do you have that keep you on top and in the game?
I don’t exactly spring out of bed but I do get up very early and I’m often well awake before my alarm at 5am, because I’ve been checking the clock on the hour, every hour. Not a good habit!
So for it all to work my morning ritual starts the night before. I have to have my yoga bag and clothes all ready to go because my brain is a little slower to get with the programme and in the past I’ve forgotten vital pieces of clothing! I do a little sequence to ease into the day, to gently stretch my spine and then try and sit quietly for five minutes. Mostly, I try not to go into immediate high gear. It’s a work in progress but my day is infinitely better if I tune in and breathe. Calmly.
What do you drink?
Warm water with a squeeze of lemon or if all the lemons have mysteriously disappeared, a dash of raw apple cider vinegar.
What do you eat?
Nothing until after yoga, then everything! If I’m in meetings or on the go I’ll have coffee followed by a smoothie. If I go straight back to my desk, oats are usually my go-to. In an ideal world I’d sort my vegetables to juice the night before or organise something for when I’m out and about. That’s happened approximately twice but I live in hope.
How do you move?
Yoga! Always. And because I’m at my desk such a lot too, I try and stretch out the kinks during the day. I keep my mat next to my desk and try to get on it, not just walk around it.
Do you have a practice of stillness or quiet?
I find I’m drawn to yin (yoga) and ‘quieter’ practices more and more now. But whenever I get on the mat, even through a fast flowing vinyasa practice, I try and find my stillness. I also have a regular meditation practice. It’s taken me a while to get there and it’s for a very short time but still…
Can you share your favourite go-to breakfast recipe?
Not exactly a recipe but…
I heat some wholegrain oats with water and a little coconut milk, chia seeds, cinnamon and a little himalayan sea salt.
I add some frozen berries and top it all off with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and almonds.
(I count my almonds, if that counts as a recipe and if chia seeds were bigger I’d probably count them too!)
