It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.
Call us nosy, but we’ve always been curious about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye, polished for their day.
We wonder, what did they eat for breakfast? Did they meditate? Did they stretch? Did they hit snooze? Did they have to only worry about themselves or a family…? So many curious questions!
Follow along as we step into the mornings of a wide range of successful ladies from all over and to uncover what habits put the spring in their morning step…
This week we chat to the super inspiring Erin O’Hara, owner of the beautiful beach side Golden Yogi studio here in Auckland…
“I’m Erin O’Hara the co-founder and director of Golden Yogi; an upmarket Yoga and Wellness Studio in Takapuna focused on developing a conscious community and providing optimum health through natural lifestyle choices to merge the mind, body, and spirit. I’m passionate about sharing Kundalini Yoga and Meditation, and I am also a qualified Naturopath” .
Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed…
My alarm goes off between 3.30 and 4am. I snooze for no more than 10 minutes as it isn’t good for your nervous system to jump straight out of bed.
I warm up with a cup of tea, hydrate with some water and then I walk to the studio in the dark which takes about 5-10 minutes. It is one of my favourite parts of the morning, as I do some star gazing and ponder on my day ahead. Once in the studio I leave the lights off, light some candles, and open the windows, as I enjoy the company of the birds that are starting to wake. I start my yoga and meditation practice at about 4-4.30am; my practice involves a lot of chanting, breath and movement which I do for 1.5-2.5 hours every day including the weekends!
What’s the first thing you drink?
I love having rooibos tea with almond milk; it is something I have had since I was a child.
What’s the first thing you eat?
Although I’m up bright and early I don’t eat till about 8am. In summer I love having a green smoothie and in winter I like to have a bowl of Little Bird cereal with almond milk and fruit on top; just whatever fruit is in season.
What’s your favourite way to move your body in the morning?
That would be my Kundalini Yoga practice! Usually I do a little wake up series which rebalances the ten bodies; working on the physical layer, as well as the 3 minds (positive mind, negative mind, and neutral mind), and the energy bodies as well.
How important is stillness or quiet space first thing?
Having stillness and a quite space first thing in the morning is crucial to my day. I always believe you must help yourself before you help others; therefore, in the morning I won’t e-mail anyone, do any work, or even teach anyone until I have done my own practice for myself. It also helps me to keep helping others as best I can.
Describe your ultimate morning. No kids, no obligations…?
I generally have my ultimate morning most days, as Kundalini Yoga is my passion I love to get up early and do my own practice, as well as teach and share it with others. A quote from Yogi Bhajan that I like to keep in mind every day is “The moment you feel that you are part of infinity and that infinity is a part of you, your limitations will cease and happiness will flow.”
Please share your favourite breakfast recipe…what’s your go-to?
In a hurry I have the Little Bird cereal, either fig and ginger or berry with whatever fruit is in season cut up on top; sometimes kiwifruit, sometimes berries and topped off with raw almond milk.
Otherwise, I love making Green Smoothies with a mixture of fruits and vegetables that are in season. A great way to boost my fruit and vegetable intake and they taste delicious!

My favourite smoothie combo is berries, spinach, banana, avocado, water or coconut water blended up.
