We are fascinated about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye, polished for their day.
We wonder, what did they eat for breakfast? Did they meditate? Did they stretch? Did they hit the snooze button? Did they only need to worry about themselves or a family? …So many questions!
Follow along as we step into the mornings of a wide range of successful ladies to uncover what habits put the spring in their morning step…
This week we chat to Claire Turnbull, the lovely and clever nutritionist behind Mission Nutrition…
“I am the Director of Mission Nutrition, Healthy Food Guide Nutritionist, Media Nutritionist, Author and Professional Speaker. I’m very nearly 35…yikes, still feel like I am 20 – surely?! I’ve been living in NZ for 12 years – came for a year, then, well – decided it was far too good here to leave! I have 1 awesome boy (nearly 3), 1 kiwi husband, 5 chickens – who need to start earning their keep and laying”.
Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed…?
No two mornings are ever the same in my house because my work hours are all over the place and with a little person, wake ups can be anytime from 5am. I get up between 4.45am and 6am depending on what time I need to start work, filming or where I need to be. Sometimes I try and work before my little boy wakes up, sometimes I reflect on my vision board and goals I have written down in my ‘It’s a beautiful day’ diary and other times, it is straight in the shower, sort my little dude out and get out the door to get him daycare on time! Mornings have sure changed since having a kid but of course, I wouldn’t change it for the world!
Upon rising…What’s the first thing you drink?
Either a good old cup of English breakfast tea (the proper stuff from the UK) or hot water with slices of ginger or fresh mint.
What’s the first thing you eat?
Anytime from 5am to 10am I have my first meal. I am a BIG believer in following your appetite and not eating because ‘its time to eat’. Some days I eat massive amounts, others, not so much. I think that’s how we are designed to eat.
My first meal is either yoghurt, fruit and nuts/seeds; chia pudding with yoghurt and fruit; a smoothie (I have SO many types I make, but they always have veg and not too much fruit), or…poached eggs on a slices of toast with avo and greens.
What’s your favourite way to move your body in the morning?
If I could, I would run, walk, do yoga or gym it in the mornings – I am a person who likes to mix things up so I change what I do depending on how I feel. As my husband leaves VERY early for work, I need to be at home for my little boy so tend to exercise later in the day now, but we are looking at making a home gym so that might change soon.
How important is stillness or quiet space first thing?
It is important, and I LOVE it and as often as I can, I make it happen.
Describe your ultimate morning. No kids, no obligations…?
Well, my dream morning would be…up….Bush walk or a walk by the sea, maybe yoga and then a super healthy brunch out (so I don’t have to cook) with some herbal tea, while reading a magazine.
