It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.
Call us nosy, but we’ve always been curious about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye, polished for their day.
We wonder, what did they eat for breakfast? Did they meditate? Did they stretch? Did they hit snooze? Did they have to only worry about themselves or a family…? So many curious questions!
Follow along as we step into the mornings of a wide range of successful ladies from all over and to uncover what habits put the spring in their morning step…
This week we have the lovely Abbie O’Rourke, founder of Auckland’s Feel Fresh Nutrition.
” My name is Abbie, I am a 32 years young, founder of Auckland’s Feel Fresh Nutrition and mum to the cheekiest little 1 year old sass-pot “.
Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed…
Mornings depend on the nights that precede them and depend entirely on whether the sass-baby has decided to party all night or not. Either way though, mornings are my favourite. I have always considered myself a morning person and generally I hit the ground running. I start the day wide awake and get our daughter out of her cot as she calls out ‘hiiiiiiiii’ from her bedroom. I then spend as much time as the morning allows, rolling around on the floor and ‘crawl-chasing’. With my baby, not my partner 🙂
Upon rising…What’s the first thing you drink?
Being a little copy-cat of a 10 year old I picked up my Mums fantastic habit of starting the day with a lemon water, still to this day that is the first thing I consume.
Second is coffee.
Since having a baby who was a terrible sleeper for the good part of 10 months, the morning coffee I share with my partner provides me with more than delicious caffeine. During those tough months, our morning coffee signalled that the night was over and we could finally begin our day. Other mums with similar experiences will know all about those endless torturous nights! Even though our wee night owl has finally got it together, our first shared coffee fills me with such relief.
What’s the first thing you eat?
Breakfast IS the most important meal of the day, I have always prioritised this meal and would prefer to leave the house without pants on than to forget, or be too busy to eat.
I always vary my options based on how I feel. My five go-to’s are warm oats, 2-ingredient pancakes, an action packed smoothie, leftovers or scrambled eggs. I generally pick warm for winter and cold for summer.
What’s your favourite way to move your body in the morning?
With a run, walk or yoga with a friend, or my new favourite – Barre! I adore exercising in the morning, the earlier the better. I love a solo run by the water or a class with a friend. The day feels right once I can tick a wee sweat session off.
How important is stillness or ‘quiet space’ first thing?
Not important. I prefer music, conversation and laughter. I like catching quiet moments throughout the day when I need to slow down. Shout out to Rod Stryker, (if you are not familiar with his guided meditations then treat yourself).
Describe your ultimate morning. No kids, no obligations…?
My ultimate morning happened last Saturday.
Wake up to a happy baby and share a coffee with my partner while laughing at babies hilarious antics, then I went out for a run. Although it was spitting with rain, the day was early, still and fresh. I love how early morning campaigners always acknowledge each other whether they are out running, getting coffees or walking dogs. It is the calmest part of the day before people flurry around barely noticing each other. I listened to a chapter of an audiobook by Cal Newport and then assigned T.I (feat Rihanna) the task of helping me finish the final kilometer before sitting down to a breakfast with my fam.
Bliss. Basically if I can find the time to exercise first thing plus spend time with my Number 1’s, then that makes it an ultimate morning.
Please share your favourite breakfast recipe…what’s your go-to?
My absolute favourite is the 2 Ingredient-Pancake.
1 banana + 1 egg. Blended together, cooked on my sandwich press and topped with coconut yoghurt and crushed almonds. Yes!
