It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.
We are fascinated about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye, polished for their day.
We wonder, what did they eat for breakfast? Did they meditate? Did they stretch? Did they hit the snooze button? Did they only need to worry about themselves or a family? …So many questions!
Follow along as we step into the mornings of a wide range of successful ladies to uncover what habits put the spring in their morning step…
This week belongs to the lovely Marysa Dalton, owner and founder of Barrefigure.
” I am Marysa Dalton, 35 and owner/founder of Barrefigure – a boutique barre fitness studio in Ponsonby. I’m a Lululemon Ambassador, wife to Peter and a first time Mum to 4 month old Alexa “.
Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed…
My day can start anywhere between 5- 7am, depending when Alexa wakes up. If it’s 5am I‘ll pull her in bed with me to breastfeed and ideally she’ll fall back asleep beside me (bliss!). Sometimes she’s ready to party bright and early, so we get up and start our day. We’re blessed with a pretty good sleeper though, so no complaints! I’ll check in with how classes are looking that day and what instructor is teaching and respond to any emails and queries. I’ll walk Lexi to sleep in the pram and grab my morning coffee (I was off it the first few months as we thought she was reacting to caffeine, but I’ve slowly re introduced it back and so far, so good!)
What’s the first thing you drink?
Just some water. I don’t require anything special!
What’s the first thing you eat?
My homemade muesli with full fat milk and greek yoghurt.
How do you most like to move your body in the morning?
It use to be teaching x3 barre classes, but as I’m only back teaching part time in the weekends and one evening, Lexi and I will go for a walk instead. On Tuesdays we head into the studio for our barreBABY class which is great way to get out of the house, move the body and connect with other mums. I’ve been trying a few other Mums and bubs classes around which is a privilege as I usually only do barre classes at my studio, but now I need baby friendly classes so it’s nice to try a few different things.
How important is stillness or ‘quiet space’ first thing?
If we’ve had a rough night (very rare) I definitely enjoy some quiet time once Lexi goes back down to sleep. I love to bake yummy slices and biscuit’s (nothing healthy about them!). Sometimes I’ll even jump back in bed for a snooze! But usually my quiet time is out for a walk with the headphones in (I’m still in work mode though as I try to find new music for our playlists!).
Describe your ultimate morning…no kids, no obligations…
It’s hard to remember my life before Lexi, but we still do similar things and love heading out for brunch to a café or going for a drive and walk to Piha or Bethells. The ultimate morning is having my husband home from work and spending the morning as a family of 3.
Please share your favourite breakfast recipe…what’s your go-to?
Rolled oats, coconut, sesame/pumpkin/sunflower seeds and linseeds coated in melted coconut oil and honey. Bake 15 mins then add chopped almonds, cashews, dates and apricots and bake again. I find the dates/nuts don’t burn if I add them nearer the end. Can use any combo of seeds/fruits etc. Delicious and you know exactly what’s in it!
