It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.
Call me nosy, but i’ve always been curious about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye polished for their day.
I wonder, how did their day start…have they eaten breakfast yet? Did they meditate? Did they already run 8km? Find out…
We will be asking a range of successful ladies from all over to find out what habits put the spring in their morning step.
This week we have Florence Van Dyke, one of the ladies behind the wonderful NZ business, CHIA Drink. Florence is also a sponsored athlete for CHIA, as a world class triathlete. Prepare to be inspired to move your body!
Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed… what habits or rising rituals do you have that keep you on top and in the game?
I have warm water with a splash of apple cider vinegar on the way to rehydrate and to kick start my metabolism.
I have a daily “to do” list that I keep with me in the car. I’m not a great sleeper so often things come to me in the night or first thing in the morning.
What do you drink?
I have a bottle of CHIA waiting on the beach to drink as soon as I’ve finished my sea swim. I go through phases, but at the moment blackcurrant is my favourite flavour.
I usually swim 4+ km (depending on the conditions) which takes over an hour so it is important to get the Chia seeds into my system as quickly as possible to replace electrolytes and magnesium and provide protein for muscle recovery.
What do you eat?
At home I rinse off and dive into my super food bircher bowl (recipe below). I soak this on a Sunday night and eat it Monday – Thursday. (Fridays are for french toast at the local cafe 7010).
How do you move?
Do you have a practice of stillness or quiet?
In the evenings I turn my phone onto flight mode for the night and listen to HeadSpace meditation.
Because CHIA is a small business we are often working on a lot of projects at once – meetings with our brand strategist, training our new CHIA team members in Auckland and Dunedin, talking with cafe owners and taking and packing orders all fit into a days work. I love the diversity at CHIA but it means there is a lot to focus on.
Meditating at night is important for me to let go and get a good eight hours of sleep
Can you share you favourite go-to morning breakfast recipe?
Absolutely! I’ve been eating this Super Food Bircher bowl non-stop for the past month, I can’t get enough of it:
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup buckwheat
1/4 cup chia seeds
1 handful of sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds
1 handful of any other nuts (walnuts and hazlenuts are my favourites)
1 cup of ‘Carew kitchen’ almond milk
Add water to cover the mixture by an inch.
Add on top fresh:
2 tablespoons ‘Raglan Coconut Yoghurt’
1 tablespoon ‘Vigour Vitalit’y hazelnut butter
Fresh fruit (can’t beat grated apple and berries)
1/2 a CHIA Drink
