A Morning In Her Shoes – Lucy O’Connor

It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.

Call me nosy, but i’ve always been curious about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye polished for their day.

I wonder, how did their day start…have they eaten breakfast yet? Did they meditate? Did they already run 8km? Find out…

We will be asking a range of successful ladies from all over to find out what habits put the spring in their morning step.

This week with the lovely lady Lucy O’Connor behind Monday Hustle.

Lucy is the face behind the exciting and inspiring blog ‘Monday Hustle’…Enjoy as we take a sneak peek into her (hilarious) mornings!

Tell us, what does your morning look like as you roll out of bed… what habits or rising rituals do you have that keep you on top and in the game?

I have to be honest here.. My mornings don’t always run as smoothly as I’d like! That good old snooze button just looks so appealing sometimes (ok, most-times). It’s actually my new years resolution to get up at 6.30am every week-day!

I’m so bad, I need a resolution to change my wicked ways.. But, even if it takes me a bit longer to rise than I’m proud of, as soon as I’m up, I make sure I exercise, or move, even if it’s only for ten minutes. I find if I get the blood pumping straight away, my day runs a lot more smoothly and my thoughts are more in order.

Then, business as usual – coffee, breakfast, carefully selecting my hustle-outfit for the day which is extremely important, as it’s my armour of confidence!

And off I go, in to the exciting unknown…

What do you drink ?

Like the snooze button, I’m slightly addicted to coffee. Being originally from Wellington, I was pretty much weaned on the stuff. I prefer to read articles about the health benefits of coffee, rather than the supposed ‘health effects’..!

Another one of my resolutions is simply to drink more water, and I’m happy to say I’ve implemented that after purchasing a drink bottle in Japan from an electronics store.

No, seriously. You can check out the video evidence in my latest post if you want!

What do you eat ?

Ahhh, now snooze button and coffee aside, I am pretty good with food. I’m one of those lucky people that actually craves vegetables.. I’ll go to a restaurant, order a salad or a vege stir fry, and genuinely be like, ‘OMFG, I cannot WAIT’.

Fruit, whole grains, anything with avocado, you’re speaking my language!

I’ve also started to drink smoothies in the morning for breakfast as well rather than eat cereal or toast (admin). My favourite one involves honey, oats, coconut water, banana, berries, cinnamon and a secret ingredient.. I call it ‘The Hustler Special’, naturally.

How do you move ?

As well as running and anything that involves jumping (circuit training, jump rope, trampolining etc), I always make sure I focus on two things – my abs and my ass. And no, not because I’m a wannabe Kardashian (although the freebies look good), but because I feel as long as I am strong in those two areas, general life becomes easier.. Walking up stairs, getting out of cars, sitting up out of bed (eventually).

I used to be a springboard diver, so I am all about that core strength, and am lucky enough to understand first hand as to why it’s so important.. Without it, I would have undoubtedly had several thousand more fails by hitting the water at painful angles.. When it did happen, I called it the high-five.. Only this was one that wasn’t mutually enjoyed!

Do you have a practice of stillness or quiet ?

My place of stillness and quiet does exist, only it’s loud and active! I’m at my most relaxed when I’m alone with my favourite music, singing as if no one is listening and dancing as if no one is watching. Well, maybe I dance as if at least one person is watching, ’cause if no one was watching, who would appreciate my impeccable Beyonce impersonation?

My mind is always in overdrive, so I zone out by zoning in to the moment, letting some energy out and having some fun with the now.

Can you share you favourite go-to morning breakfast recipe ?

If time / motivate / bank account allowed, I would eat this every day!
Recipe thanks to Sarah Tuck who writes the amazing blog, ‘From The Kitchen’…

How to:

Bring a reasonably large pot of water to the boil, reduce to a simmer, add vinegar then one by one, crack an egg into a cup and slip gently into the water.
Simmer for 3 minutes then remove with a slotted spoon.
Spread toast with hummus and top each slice with quarter of the avocado and an egg and sprinkle with hummus. Dig in!
