It’s been said time and time again that attaining a morning ritual or taking solo time before the pressures of the day begin, can truly help success, productivity and happiness.
Call me nosy, but i’ve always been curious about how other people spend their mornings before they arrive in the public eye polished for their day.
I wonder, how did their day start…have they eaten breakfast yet? Did they meditate? Did they already run 8km? Find out…
We will be asking a range of successful ladies from all over to find out what habits put the spring in their morning step.
This week we have Nicola behind the popular wellness blog Eat Well NZ.
Nicola is a well-known kiwi registered nutritionist, holistic well-being expert and foodie who blogs about all things healthy. Nicola shares her rising rituals with us & her favourite smoothie recipe…yum!
TELL US, WHAT DOES YOUR MORNING LOOK LIKE AS YOU ROLL OUT OF BED…
WHAT HABITS OR RISING RITUALS DO YOU HAVE THAT KEEP YOU ON TOP AND IN THE GAME?
I’d love to say that I’m a morning person but I’m afraid I’m not!
After my alarm goes off, my day usually starts in a happy way with my dog Pippa jumping on the bed to see me and we have a quick pat/cuddle while I try to avoid her licking my face! This always makes me smile. My husband and I will chat over breakfast, and then it’s generally a bit rush to get out the door. We have a coffee machine, and my husband will make us coffee to takeaway most mornings. Because I love coffee, this is a nice way to start the day.
WHAT DO YOU EAT?
It depends! Sometimes I’ll have homemade muesli or oats with yoghurt and berries. Other times I’ll have avocado and tomato on toast, in the weekends I might have eggs. I make smoothies in the morning for my husband and I. I normally have a small one to go alongside whatever I’m having. Sometimes I’ll just have a big smoothie.
WHAT DO YOU DRINK?
Usually just a glass of plain water, and as above a small smoothie.
HOW DO YOU MOVE?
I roll out of bed. Haha. I’m not a morning exerciser. I sometimes bike or walk to work if the weather is nice, but I generally exercise at lunch time or in the evenings.
DO YOU HAVE A PRACTICE OF STILLNESS OR QUIET?
During the weekdays, no. I find I’m more of an evening person for these things.
In the weekends, I like to sit outside on the patio and enjoy the quietness with a coffee. It’s a nice peaceful way to start the weekend.
CAN YOU SHARE YOUR FAVOURITE GO-TO MORNING BREAKFAST RECIPE?
This coconut, chia and berry bircher muesli is a summer favourite. The recipe can be found here.
My favourite smoothie right now is this…
Vanilla and Boysenberry Smoothie:
~ 1 cup boysenberries
~ 1 frozen chopped banana
~ 3/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
~ ½ teaspoon vanilla bean paste
~ 1-2 tablespoons cashew nuts
~ 8 cm piece of peeled cucumber, chopped
~ 4 dessertspoons of Greek yoghurt (about 150g)
~ 1 tablespoon chia seeds
I simply whizz it all up in my NutriBullet (or blender) and it’s done.
