We’re obsessed with hearing about what other people eat all day everyday and we just know that you’re all as curious as we are! There’s something so intriguing about knowing the secrets of a healthy foodie. Follow along with this series where we find out what a wide range of successful health-loving ladies eat in a day.

Alana is a content developer, food photographer, and founder of A Little Bit Yummy, a world leading website helping people with gut issues love the low FODMAP diet. Alana grew up in a restaurant on a deer farm in the Waikato. From an early age she learnt that fresh food was good food which is a philosophy she brings into her recipes. When Alana was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease and later Irritable Bowel Syndrome she was put on a strict gluten free diet and the low FODMAP diet. Alana decided to make the most of this experience and founded A Little Bit Yummy to help people with gut issues fall back in love with food! She’s also the author of The Gut Friendly Cookbook. Alana now provides dietitian reviewed resources to millions of people around the world.

Your go-to brekkie is….

That depends on the morning! And whether it’s a recipe development day. My fall back breakfast is always gluten free weetbix with coconut yoghurt and strawberries. However I love good French toast with bacon, or pancakes, or creamed rice topped with banana and brown sugar.

Your go-to lunch is…

Lunch is normally a mishmash affair or what’s left over from the night before or a quick salad dish! I’m trying to focus really hard on reducing food waste and eat what’s already prepped instead of making something new. This week I had some leftover salad stuff so I created a nourishing bowl featuring pre-cooked brown rice, a winter salad, a fried egg, and a spicy peanut sauce made from pantry ingredients.

Your go-to dinner is…

I develop new dinner recipes each week for our FODMAP Recipe Club so this is always changing from stir-fries to salads to epic pasta dishes. However, if I’m running out of time, then my fall-back is a roast veggie frittatafilled with broccoli, cheese and topped with a homemade tomato relish!

Dessert or no dessert…

Definitely dessert. I love my sweet treats… brownie, ice cream, fruit and maple syrup, cake! Pretty much anything I can make gluten free and low FODMAP.

My current dessert of choice is an instant brownie in a mug that I can whip up in less than 3 minutes and top with sprinkles.

What you reach for when a snack attack hits…

It’s smoothie time! They are filling, delicious and a good way to get my daily serve of fruit into my diet. My favourite flavour combos at the moment are kiwifruit and banana or blueberry vanilla.

Your fave foodie destination…

I think I’m going to choose Banh Mi Caphe in Hamilton. They have great gluten free options and do some amazing street style Vietnamese food. It’s also super reasonably priced which makes my budget happy.

Three foods you can’t live without…

This is a tough question! I’m not sure the foodie in me can limit myself to just three… but let’s try.

  • Cheese. I recently got cheese back into my diet and it has revolutionised my world. I now try and put it in everything from vegemite and cheese toasties, to frittatas, nachos, Bolognese…
  • Chocolate. I’m an unashamed chocolate addict. I don’t drink coffee or indulge in alcohol so chocolate is my go-to. I love a good rich dark chocolate that is a little bit bitter and not too sweet. Then I enjoy turning it into hot chocolate, chocolate truffle balls or self-saucing chocolate pudding!
  • Yoghurt? I’m finding choosing only one more food a challenge and it’s giving me anxiety! Right now I’m into smoothies so a vanilla Greek yoghurt is featuring in my fridge.

Your ultimate foodie indulgence…

My current guilty pleasure is a Queen Anne Dark Chocolate Strawberry & Caramel Marshmallow Bar. I refuse to share this chocolate and it is my little moment of bliss at the end of a busy week.

The recipe that will always get you drooling…

Chicken wings! Oh my gosh I just love them. They always turn out tender, and sticky, and just so flavourful. If I don’t know what to cook then these are my go to. My favourite way to have them is smothered in a sweet orange sauce and sesame seeds. This is also one of the dishes that helped me win over my boyfriend many years ago!

You can grab the recipe here or find it in The Gut Friendly Cookbook!
